Dear Friends,

The Schrebergarten Untitled, is part of a series of Art-in-Public space works from Home is Where the Art Is, a collective that focuses on articulations of home and domesticity and play it out in public space.
Here is a short summary to pique your interest (a German version is written below):
The Schrebergarten, Untitled is an intervention in the form of an investigative project into the workings of a garden community in Stadlau-Smolagasse in the 22nd District of Vienna.
The focus of the “expedition” is to discover social habits, activities and guidelines that govern this community of Schrebergaerten. The field research looks into the day- to- day running of the Schrebergarten , the social interactions within it, and the relationships between the Schrebergarten owners and the gardens they tend . It also sets out to document facts, rituals, relationships, social hierarchies, garden gnomes and garden houses. In the end, The Schrebergarten, Untitled is an anthropological endeavor turned on its head that opens questions into ethnographical inquests, post-colonial subjectivity and highlights the divergent characters and characteristics of those who reside within the city of Vienna.
The results of the field research is archived in a mobile research lab, a caravan, stationed in Karlsplatz from July 29- August 10, 2010.

The Schrebergarten, Untitled: Eine Überschreitung Transdanubiens
“Today artists cannot pretend any more to constitute an avant-garde offering a radical critique, but this is not a reason to proclaim that their political role has ended. They still can play an important role in the hegemonic struggle by subverting the dominant hegemony and by contributing to the construction of new subjectivities.”
Chantal Mouffe
